Jones became a varsity starter at Apple Valley High School as an eighth grader in the 2009-10 season. He averaged 16.8 points and 8.1 assists per game, helping his team to a 20–8 record. At just 13 years old, he received his first recruiting letter from USC. During his freshman season, Jones averaged 20.1 points, 7.1 assists, and 2.6 steals per game, despite missing seven weeks due to a lacerated kidney.
