In 1988, Lowe was embroiled in a sex tape scandal, which temporarily hindered his career. However, by the early 2000s, Lowe made a comeback with a notable role as Sam Seaborn in the NBC political drama The West Wing (1999–2003). His performance earned him nominations for a Primetime Emmy Award and two Golden Globe Awards.

Early Life
Lowe was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, to Barbara, a teacher, and Charles “Chuck” Davis Lowe, a trial lawyer. As a baby, he lost complete hearing in his right ear due to undiagnosed mumps. His parents divorced when he was young, and Lowe was baptized in the Episcopal Church. He has German, English, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh ancestry. On the show Who Do You Think You Are?, Lowe discovered that one of his ancestors, Christopher East, had served as a Hessian soldier during the U.S. War of Independence. He was captured at the American victory at Trenton in 1776 and chose to stay in the U.S. as a POW.
Lowe grew up in Dayton, Ohio, in a “traditional American setting.” After moving to Malibu, California, with his mother and brother, he attended Santa Monica High School, where he met Charlie Sheen. In his autobiography Stories I Only Tell My Friends, Lowe mentioned that both he and Sheen were “nerds” back in the day, and that Sheen had aspirations of becoming a baseball player.
