Born in Los Angeles, California, Young attended Hamilton High School, Dorsey High School, and Cleveland High School in Reseda, California. During his senior year at Cleveland, he averaged 27.2 points and 10.8 rebounds, earning multiple honors, including CIF L.A. City Section, Los Angeles Times All-City, and San Fernando Valley first-team selections. He was ranked the seventh-best player in the nation by HoopScoop and was considered among the top 50 recruits in 2004. Young once scored 56 points in a single game and recorded 23 rebounds in another.
College Career
Young played for the University of Southern California (USC) from 2004 to 2007. He earned All-Pac-10 First Team honors in both the 2005–06 and 2006–07 seasons. In the 2007 NCAA Tournament, Young led USC to a Sweet Sixteen appearance, where they were defeated by the North Carolina Tar Heels. Along the way, he helped USC defeat Arkansas in the first round and scored 22 points in a second-round win over Texas, even though Texas’ Kevin Durant was the game’s top scorer. After his junior year, Young declared for the 2007 NBA Draft and decided to forgo his senior season.
