Of French-Canadian and Irish descent, Steen speaks French as his first language and learned English by mimicking WWF Monday Night Raw broadcasts. While he participated in ice hockey, soccer, and baseball during his youth, Steen decided against pursuing those sports professionally, especially soccer after suffering an injury at 11. Instead, after watching the match between Diesel and Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania XI with his father, Steen set his sights on becoming a professional wrestler.

The following year, he trained under Jacques Rougeau and later with Terry Taylor, who became his “main trainer.” Steen had his first match on May 7, 2000, his 16th birthday, in L’Assomption, Quebec. After spending four years wrestling for Rougeau’s promotion, Steen branched out to perform for several other Canadian wrestling promotions.
