Early Life and Education
Norton was born Graham William Walker on April 4, 1963, at 48 St Brigid’s Road in Clondalkin, County Dublin, Ireland, to William “Billy” (who passed away in 2000), a Guinness sales representative, and Rhoda Walker. He has an older sister, Paula (born 1959). Due to his father’s job, Norton’s family moved around Ireland during his early years, living in Tramore, Waterford, and Kilkenny before settling in Bandon, County Cork, where he grew up. Raised in a Church of Ireland family, Norton has mentioned feeling somewhat isolated as a Protestant in the predominantly Catholic south of Ireland.
His father’s family hailed from County Wicklow, while his mother was from Belfast. In a 2007 episode of Who Do You Think You Are?, Norton discovered that his father’s direct ancestors were from Yorkshire and had emigrated to Ireland in 1713. Norton attended Bandon Grammar School in County Cork before moving on to University College Cork, where he studied English and French for two years in the 1980s. He left his studies after experiencing a breakdown and isolating himself in his flat.
