Early Life
Slay hails from Brunswick, Georgia, where he attended Brunswick High School. There, he played as both a running back and defensive back. In his senior year, Slay earned All-State honors at defensive back from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and was select for the Georgia North-South All-Star Game. He rushed for over 1,300 yards and 15 touchdowns during the 2008 season and also intercepted six passes, returning two for touchdowns. Slay’s junior year was cut short by a torn medial collateral ligament (MCL), but he still manage to rush for 336 yards and six touchdowns in just five games. In his sophomore season, Slay rushed for 1,127 yards on 142 attempts and scored 13 touchdowns. Additionally, he excelled in track and field, clocking a 10.92-second time in the 100 meters and 22.0 seconds in the 200 meters.
College Career
Slay initially attended Itawamba Community College before transferring to Mississippi State University. At Itawamba, Slay had an impressive freshman year, earning First-team Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) All-State honors and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Region 23 honors. He recorded 41 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, one sack, and two forced fumbles in just five games. After the season, he was named a JC Gridwire Preseason Second-team All-American.
In his final season, Slay played in nine games, notched 32 tackles, had one tackle for loss, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and also caught three passes for 63 yards and a touchdown, earning MACJC First-team All-State honors on both defense and special teams.
