His mother was from Waterford in the southeast of Ireland, while his father was from New York. Neeson was raised as a Catholic and was named Liam after a local priest. He has three sisters—Elizabeth, Bernadette, and Rosaleen.
He attended St. Patrick’s College in Ballymena from 1963 to 1967, where he first developed an interest in drama. Neeson has mentioned that growing up Catholic in a predominantly Protestant town made him cautious, although he never felt “inferior or different” at the local technical college. He has said he was never deeply involved in the nationalistic aspects of Irish identity, describing himself as “out of touch” with the politics of Northern Ireland until the Bloody Sunday incident in 1972.
