Al Green was born in Forrest City, Arkansas, on April 13, 1946, as the sixth of ten children to Cora Lee and Robert G. Greene Jr., a sharecropper. At around age ten, he began performing with his sister in a group called the Greene Brothers. The family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, in the late 1950s. During his teenage years, Green was kicked out of his home after his deeply religious father found him listening to Jackie Wilson’s music. Afterward, Green lived with a prostitute, became involved in hustling, and experimented with drugs.
