Embiid was born in Yaoundé, Cameroon, to Thomas Embiid, a military officer, and Christine. Growing up, he played volleyball and soccer and initially planned to pursue a professional volleyball career in Europe. However, he began playing basketball at age 15, modeling his style after NBA Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon. Embiid was discovered at a basketball camp by fellow Yaoundé native and NBA player Luc Mbah a Moute.
