Gary Payton Biography Gary Dwayne Payton Sr. born July 23, 1968 is a retired American professional basketball player who played as a point guard in the NBA. Widely regarded as one of the greatest point guards in basketball history, Payton is best known for his 13-year career with the Seattle Super Sonics, where he holds franchise records in both assists and steals and led the team to an NBA Finals appearance. He also had stints with the Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, and Miami Heat, with whom he won an NBA championship in 2006. Known as “The Glove” for his exceptional defensive skills, Payton was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013 and was named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in October 2021.

Gary Payton played high school basketball at Skyline High School in Oakland, California, before continuing his career at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. Over his four years at OSU, he became one of the university’s most decorated basketball players. During his senior year, Payton was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated as the nation’s best player in 1990. He was a consensus All-American that year, a three-time All-Pac-10 selection, and earned the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honor in 1987. Payton was named MVP of the Far West Classic tournament three times and was recognized as Pac-10 Player of the Week nine times. He also made the Pac-10 All-Decade Team. By the time he graduated, Payton held OSU records for points, field goals, three-point field goals, assists, and steals. Throughout his college career, the Oregon State Beavers made three NCAA Tournament appearances and one NIT appearance.
